My Favourite Breakfast Smoothie Recipe

I’ve flirted with healthy eating in the past, but that’s all it’s ever been, and as hard as I’ve tried, I’ve really struggled to ever stick to a healthy diet. But these days, you can find me Googling where to buy ‘bee pollen’ (the new superfood, apparently - if it’s good enough for Mille Mack, it’s good enough for me), or even rustling up one of Deliciously Ella‘s newest recipes. So unlike me, I know. This is the same girl who has one heck of a sweet tooth that just demands to be satisfied at the end of every meal, but now I think I’ve found a way around that niggly, I-need-chocolate-now feeling.

“Clean eating” has been trending worldwide for most of 2014, and it’s one of the most exciting things to have hit my Instagram feed; I’ve been following a whole bunch of new accounts every week! There’s The Breakfast Bird, Anni Kravi and Ella Grace Denton, and that’s just a few. I have only dipped my toe in the “clean eating” water, so I am a real newbie when it comes to the in-depth principles of clean eating, but I thought I’d share a breakfast smoothie recipe that helps me feel wide awake and ready for the day.

This is really easy and quick to put together, and the best thing is that you can take it in a bottle with you and head out of the door in the morning - perfect if you’re like me and love hitting ‘snooze’ at least 5 times in the AM! I normally look forward to breakfast in the morning anyway, but I’ve felt that even more now that I have this to help start my day; it’s so super tasty. The oats help to fill me up for the entire morning, the chia seeds are chock-full of omega 3 goodness, and the flaxseed is a good source of calcium and iron. You can also add spinach to really give you a boost, and I promise - you’ll barely taste it in there. This is a super simple recipe that can be played around with, so feel free to add or take out anything you like.

You will need:

  • 220ml unsweetened almond milk (Blue Diamond is way nicer than Alpro, IMO)
  • A handful of blueberries and strawberries, chopped up
  • A small banana, chopped up
  • A heaped teaspoon of chia seeds
  • A heaped teaspoon of flaxseed
  • A tablespoon of rolled oats

Simply whiz it all together, and sip up!


I also added a few pieces of nectarine to this recipe recently (“before-blend” shot above!) and that was just as delicious! I’ve also tried adding mango, passion fruit and pineapple - all really yummy and perfect to give you a healthy boost and lots of energy in the morning.
