New Year's Eve Playlists

Staying in or going out? Pick your NYE playlist…

Well, we’ve nearly made it to the end of 2014. It’s almost time to brush off your sequinned threads, smear on a red lippy and head out to the midnight ball-drop. Or, if you’re like me, you’ll be getting cosy in your pj’s and watching Jools Holland on the sofa with a bag of popcorn the size of your head. I much prefer a stay-in NYE over a going out, but as I’m aware that some of you will be choosing a tequila over the TV, I’ve assembled two 4-hour playlists for both NYE scenarios.

The “Going Out” playlist will take you from some lighter, slower beats straight through to some of the best dance anthems of the year - cue guilty pleasures by the likes of Duke Dumont, Disclosure and Mark Ronson. There’s also plenty of old-school jams to take you back a few more years, such as Kelis, Ja Rule and The Notorious B.I.G., and what New Year’s Eve would be complete without some Stevie Wonder? The playlist also takes you through the disco and soul era, complete with Sister Sledge, Kool & The Gang and Otis Redding. And any vibin’ playlist of mine can’t exclude the man that remains on my must-see bucket list: Prince. (Hint: adjust your Spotify settings for a 5-second bleed between tracks for ultimate sonic satisfaction).

The “Staying In” playlist has been arranged with a cosy but lively night in in mind. Whether you’re staying in your onesie and playing games with friends or having a family get-together, there’s something for every generation in there. My favourites of the bunch? Kyla La Grange’s “Cut Your Teeth” is a can’t-skip, as is the classic “Sultans of Swing” by Dire Straits.

Pick your playlist and go forth into the New Year in sonic style.
